Free spectacles distributed to 150 elderly in Kwakta

Moirang, August 11 2026: A spectacle distribution programme was held at Kwakta Santhong Bazar today as part of the ongoing free eye-testing and spectacle distribution initiative being undertaken across Moirang Assembly Constituency under the initiative of former MLA of Moirang AC Prithviraj Mairembam.

The programme was held alongside a 'Har Ghar Tiranga' rally.

The 13th phase of the spectacle distribution programme was attended by former MLA Prithviraj Mairembam, his wife Khelena Gurumayum, former Kwakta Gram Panchayat pradhans Md Rafi, Md Iboton and Md Azad, Assistant Professor Md Rafijuddin, and former Moirang Municipal Council councillors M Basanta, M Ropojit, K Memthoi, H Bishe, K Ibemcha and K Premila, among others.

Speaking on the occasion, Prithviraj Mairembam said the initiative was being continued to provide assistance to elderly people suffering from vision-related problems.

He said difficulties with eyesight can severely affect a person's quality of life and expressed hope that the initiative would provide some relief to senior citizens.

Highlighting the historical ties between Kwakta and Moirang, he said the two areas have shared a long history and lived together in harmony.

However, he noted that tensions and hatred between communities have emerged at times.

Recalling the violence of May 3, 1993, he said women from Kwakta who used to come to Moirang to sell vegetables had stopped doing so due to fear following the incident.

Drawing lessons from the two World Wars and the rebuilding of Japan after the atomic bombings, Mairembam said Manipur too must rebuild itself through collective efforts despite the difficulties it has faced.

He stressed the need to nurture the younger generation towards harmony and peaceful coexistence, saying parents and community leaders must begin by promoting peaceful living within their own families and communities.

He also maintained that those who commit offences should be punished in accordance with law.

Free spectacles were distributed to 150 elderly persons aged above 60 years during the programme.

Later, ahead of the 80th Independence Day, Prithviraj Mairembam, along with residents of Kwakta, took part in a 'Har Ghar Tiranga Rally' which began from Kwakta Santhong Keithel.
