Poppy plantations in Cdl, IE destroyed

Acting on a specific inputs, a joint team of Narcotics and Affairs of Border PS, Narcotic Control Bureau, district police (Chandel, Lamlai) and district administrations of Chandel and Imphal East, 5th IRB along with Assam Rifles (21AR & 32 AR) destroyed illicit poppy cultivation in 12 different places of Chandel district from Jan 5 to 7 and Nongmaijing Hill Range, Imphal East district on Jan 8.Altogether 198 acres of poppy cultivation were destroyed in the two districts, according to a statement issued by the PRO of Police Dept.
The probable yield of the destroyed poppy plants is about 2574 kgs of opium whose approximate value is about Rs 154,440,000 in the grey market.
The operation resulted in destruction of poppy plants on the eve of their harvesting thereby preventing extraction of large quantity of opium, which is later processed to convert into heroin, a narcotic drug under NDPS Act, 1985 (as amended in 2014).12 different cases have been registered in the NAB PS regarding the illicit opium cultivation and investigation is going on, it added.
