Imphal, October 08 2024:
Reacting to the recent ED summons served to him, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president MLA K Meghachandra contended that misusing investigating agencies by the BJP government for silencing opposition parties and gagging vocal critic of the government is not a recent phenomenon.
Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, K Meghachandra accused the BJP-led government of abusing power, claiming that agencies like the ED, CBI, and NIA are being used as political tools as could be comprehended from such agencies used to settle political score including detention and targeting of opposition figures such as like AAP's Arvind Kejriwal, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and P Chidambaram.
Stating that he had held no government post, Meghachandra asserted he never committed any wrong and will continue to work for the people under democracy.
However, there is no such thing as right and wrong in the steps taken up by the centre.
Since BJP government came to power at the centre, states ruled by INDIA bloc were overthrown through deceit.
During the 2017 state assembly election wherein 28 Congress candidates got elected, the government was forcefully formed by BJP without issuing invite to the Congress.
Such acts of the government affected the power and function of the state undermining the federal structure.
Regretting that elected representatives could not speak freely inside as well as outside the assembly and parliament diluting the meaning of democracy, he observed that summon served to him by ED must be a political vendetta as he had merely raised voice against the government over failure to restore peace.
Stating that it is his responsibility to remind the government that resolving the conflict and restoring peace and normalcy in the state is its duty, Meghachandra asserted that the summon served to him by ED cannot intimidate him, but instead embolden him to continue working for the people and uphold rights of the people.
Meanwhile, MPCC spokesperson N Bhupenda declared that the Congress party considers the summon notice served to president K Meghachandra by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) nothing less than 'political vendetta' but the party will continue to expose failed commitments that the double engine government of BJP made to the people.
MPCC strongly condemned the notice served by ED to Meghachandra as such acts are 'political revenge', Bhupenda told media persons at Congress Bhawan Tuesday.
He said that K Meghachandra has been vocal against BJP governments at the Centre and in the state and exposed their failed commitments.
K Meghachandra is spokesperson of the people of Manipur and will continue to do in case the BJP government could not live up to the people's expectation, Bhupenda said.
According to N Bhupenda, K Meghachandra received a summon notice from ED all of sudden on Sunday and told him to appear at the ED's New Delhi office on Monday.
Despite receiving the summon notice, Meghachandra was unable to visit New Delhi due to time constraints, he said and strongly alleged that serving summons in short notice is akin to harassment.
