Imphal, October 02 2010:
Indefinite general strike called by student bodies to pressurize the state government to appoint a principal of the only government run higher secondary school in the town has hit normal trade activities in the international trade centre in Moreh, today.
Due to the general strike, transport services and marketplaces remain largely closed in the town.
It also affected the Namphalong market on Myanmar side as no traders from Imphal arrived at Moreh.
Three students bodies, AMSU, KSO and Moreh Higher Secondary School Students' Union imposed the general strike along the Imphal-Moreh section of the NH-39 effective from 6 am Friday demanding appointment of a principal of the higher secondary lying vacant since a long time.
They also strongly alleged government negligence in solving the problems of the only higher secondary school despite repeated pleas.
Members of the agitating students' body warned that if government fails to comply with their genuine demands within October 4, the stir will be intensified.
The agitation will aim to close all central and state governemnt offices, including banks, and prevent movement of vehicles allotted to government departments, boycotting all government sponsored functions, etc.
they said.
The first day of the bandh was relaxed for passenger service vehicles leaving Moreh for Imphal with the warning not to come back to Moreh till the indefinite general strike has ended.
The bandh is continuing peacefully without any untoward incidents, a police report said.
However, other sources have reported that the bandh has been intensified.
