UPF bats for safe 'return' of IDPs

Along with conduct of a discussion programme on roles of civil society organisations to resolve the ongoing conflict, United Peoples' Front (UPF) celebrated its 26th Foundation Day at Manipur Press Club, here, on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion marked by silence of two minutes in honour of its departed members, president Nongthombam Rupachandra elaborated that UPF has been initiating various activities aimed at welfare and development of the people of Manipur and expressed hope that the Foundation Day celebration would contribute to bringing peace and tranquillity in the conflict-ridden state.
The president urged the state government to implement measures that would allow the internally displaced persons, who have been living in relief camps since the outbreak of the crisis on May 3 last year, to return safely to their homes.
He mentioned that the UPF has been reaching out to the violence-affected families and will continue to offer all possible support in the future.
Additionally, the UPF president appealed to the relevant department to address the issue of exorbitant rise in prices of essential commodities in the state.
He also recalled said that the Front in collaboration with the community had organised Mega Marathon and conducted medical camps in the hills, with the primary goal of promoting healthy living among the people in those areas.
The Front is also planning to continue such initiatives in the future, he confided and urged the public to support and cooperate in its endeavours.
The function was also attended by NIPCO president Oinam Premjit, MAPI Council president KC Romio, CADA president Hijam Priyokumar, AMPFA president Konthoujam Thoiba Meitei as presidium members while UPF advisor Laishangbam Jadumani addressed the gathering as a resource person.
