Moirang, February 26 2026:
The residents of Phougakchao Ikhai have issued a stem warning that they will block the road connecting Phougakchao Ikhai to Kumbi Sandhong along the Tiddim Road under Kumbi Assembly Constituency if repair work is not initiated by February 28.Addressing on behalf of the villagers, Khangembam Memchoubi alleged that the road stretch has remained neglected since repair work was undertaken prior to the eruption of ethnic violence in the State on May 3, 2023.She claimed that the stretch was never blacktopped and has since deteriorated severely.
Describing the road as a vital lifeline for the constituency and surrounding areas, Memchoubi said its dilapidated condition has caused immense hardship to residents living along both sides.
Many of the villagers, who had earlier been displaced and later returned, are now facing renewed difficulties due to the poor road condition.
She stated that during the rainy season the road becomes muddy and nearly impassable, while in the dry season it is covered in thick dust, leading to health problems among residents.
Memchoubi further pointed out that while the 9-kilometre stretch from Kumbi Sandhong to Saiton has been blacktopped, the remaining portion from Saiton Khunou to Phougakchao Ikhai remains unattended.
She further noted that though the Chief Minister of Manipur had announced that repair work on the Moirang-Wangoo road would begin within 15 days, she expressed disappointment that the repair for the road stretch is not expected to be happen soon.
Warning of intensified agitation, she said that if authorities fail to begin repair work by February 28, villagers will launch a road blockade from March 1 until their demand is addressed.
