Imphal, November 25 2024:
The ongoing disruptions to formal education in the state due to the prevailing crisis have raised concerns about students' preparedness for national and international competitive examinations, opined EK Higher Secondary School secretary P Saratchandra, who called on the state government to develop a robust policy to ensure uninterrupted education, even during crisis.
Addressing the media at the school in Sangakpham on Monday morning, Saratchandra emphasised on the importance of prioritising education, describing students as the pillars of the future.
He referred to global initiatives like the Save Schools Declaration adopted by 120 countries in 2015 and the recent efforts by the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attacks in September.
However, he lamented that, unlike these global efforts, Manipur has faced repeated school closures, leaving students without consistent .access to education.
He pointed out that schools in the state have had minimal working days this year.
Generally, November is the month when schools across the state put their best efforts to complete the syllabus but today teachers are struggling to complete syllabi in time.
This situation has placed students at a disadvantage, especially with major national-level examinations scheduled between January and April.
Saratchandra expressed concern over the government's lack of clarity, citing the recent contradictory orders issued on Sunday -one directing the resumption of classes, only to be followed by an extension of the suspension for two more days.
While affluent families may send their children to schools outside the state, the majority of students in Manipur depend on local institutions, which are struggling to maintain a consistent schedule.
Saratchandra stressed that the central board examinations will proceed as planned, leaving state's students disadvantaged due to the repeated interruptions in their education.
He urged the government to adopt a fresh approach to protect education during times of crisis, emphasising that the future of students, and the state depends on such measures.
