CM incinerates drugs worth ₹399 Cr

Imphal, January 25 2025: Chief Minister N Biren Singh incinerated confiscated illegal drugs weighing a total of 314.471 kg, estimated to be worth around ₹399,87,16,000 in the international market on Saturday.

The incineration was conducted during the Drugs Disposal programme, organised by Manipur Police Department, at Shija Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility, Lamdeng.

Addressing the function, CM Biren stated that after the formation of BJP government, the "War on Drugs" campaign was started to combat drug menace in the state, disclosing that the youth of the northeast states have been affected by drugs and problem of drug abuse has also extended to the mainland cities of the country.

He disclosed that the government had been conducting the disposal of drugs regularly totalling to six times with Saturday's disposal.

"The government has been facing lots of resistance, criticism and continuous challenges in its fight against drugs.

However the government will continue its 'War on Drugs' campaign by overcoming all the hurdles," he stated, adding that the unprecedented crisis in the state is one of the outcomes of this campaign.

Biren then cited that the destruction drive against poppy plantations has been carried out extensively in various districts of the state, while appreciating the collective efforts extended by state police force, Central Reserve Police Forces (CRPF), Border Security Forces (BSF), Forest department officials, Army, Assam Rifles among others in the poppy destruction drive.

He asserted that a two-way mechanism will be adopted, which includes seizure of drugs on one hand and dealing with the drug addicts with sympathy by providing shelter in rehabilitation centres to make them able to stay away from drugs and live a drug free life on the other.

Citing that the number of drug addicts has gone down in the state, Biren said that the government had already sanctioned around Rs 5 crore for construction of a rehabilitation centre in Ukhrul district.

He then appealed to the public for cooperation and support to combat the drug issues in the state.

The types of drugs and quantity disposed were heroin powder of 9.884kg, brown sugar of 244.409 kg, WY tablet of 26.239kg, SP capsule of 661gm, N-10 tablet of 493 gm, Pseudoephedrine tablet of 505 gm, Ganja (weed) of 32.280 kg accumulating to total weight of 314.471 kg.

The programme was attended by Forest minister Thongam Biswajit Singh, IPR minister Dr Sapam Ranjan, CAF&PD minister Leishangthem Sushindro Meitei, Social Welfare minister Heikham Dingo Singh, Education minister Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh, Lamlai AC MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha Singh, Lamsang AC MLA Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh, DGP Rajiv Singh, administrative secretaries and high ranking police officials among others.
