Imphal, May 24 2024:
The proscribed Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) reportedly punished a 61-year-old rape accused by shooting on his leg in Bishnupur district on Friday.
The rape accused is a resident under Kumbi police station in Bishnupur district.
The alleged accused was produced before media at a place in Bishnupur district.
Talking to the media, an RPF member who identified self as the outfit's Central Bureau division secretary, declared that the accused person has been found guilty of outraging modesty of a 26-year-old mentally unsound woman and as such slapped with three penalties.
The first penalty is payment of compensation amounting Rs 5 lakh to the rape survivor's family within 10 days, and the second to banish him from his native village for five years.
Further disclosing that the Front will award another penalty to him soon, the secretary said Manipur has a history of thousands of years with rich culture, tradition and morality.
As elders play the role of educating the young ones on the culture, tradition and morality, RPF will never tolerate elders indulging in sexual crimes, asserted the secretary.
The accused raped the mentally unsound woman three times taking advantage of her frequent visits to his house for watching TV.
The matter came to light when the woman was taken to a nearby PHC for physical checkup as her menstruation cycle ceased only to find that she was three-month pregnant.
The woman's family tried to negotiate the matter with Ibohal but he outrightly declined.
Ultimately, the matter was brought up to the notice of the RPF, the secretary informed, adding that its members picked up Ibohal from his house on May 18 and investigated the matter.
As the Front did not want incidents like mob violence which would cause hardships to the innocent members of family, they waited for some days.
They had also called representatives of local club and Meira Paibi Lup, and advised them not to resort to mob violence which could affect the family members of the guilty person, the secretary added.
