Imphal, November 23 2010: Police has sounded alert to the security forces and police on the stretch of national highways, NH-39 and NH-53, following a threatened to impose indefinite economic blockade on these highways effective from Wednesday.

The Joint Action Committee on Delimitation with its head office at Old Lambulane, Imphal, in its press release issued on November 15 announced that an indefinite economic blockade could be imposed along NH-39 and 53 with effect from November 24 till the tribal people of Manipur are given all political rights enshrined in the constitution of India.

In protest against the alleged political suppression, discrimination, deprivation and intimidation of the indigenous tribal people, the press statement signed by its convener H Benjamin Mate has announced the indefinite blockade, a police source said.

However, any of the officials of the JAC was available for comment in this regard and whether the purpose economic blockade would go on as announced earlier.

All security posts and police outposts have been sounded alert as members of the JAC with the support of other tribal community residing along the highways are likely to resort to violent activities during their course of agitation, a police officer in the state police headquarters said.

On the other hand, the ongoing indefinite Chandel district bandh imposed by the All Tribal Chiefs and Public Grievances Forum was suspended with effect from today till November 30 following an agreement was reached with the district administration.

The bandh has been disturbing normal traffic along the Indo-Myanmar section of the NH-39 for the last four days since November 19 .

A meeting with representatives of All Tribal Chiefs and Public Grievances Forum and Chandel DC Chandel held at the office chamber of the DC in connection with the bandh on November 22 .

The meeting thoroughly discussed issues related to the implementation of developmental works in Chandel district and demands of the tribal chiefs and after a detail deliberation of the issues raised by the representatives of the Forum agreed to suspend the bandh, an official source from Chandel district said Tuesday.

On the issues of release of cash component for implementation of IAY (MSDP) for 2008-09, the DC clarified that government has reviewed the matter and the amount is expected to be released before Christmas.

Regarding MGNREGS, it was clarified that the wages for 17 days has been released for 2010-11 so far.

After discussion, it was agreed that the district administration, Chandel will release another installment of 20 days wages along with some material component as may be permissible by the available fund by November 30 .

In case of any possibly of delay, the representatives of the forum will be intimated in advance, the DC agreed.

Earlier, the All Tribal Chiefs and Public Grievances Forum, Chandel in a press release issued by its general secretary DK Solomon announced to call an indefinite Chandel district has been imposed lamenting that government ignore implementation of developmental work in the district.
