JNIMS interns demand stipend hike, launch stir

Imphal, August 18 2025: JNIMS Students' Association, along with the 2020-21 batch of internees, launched an indefinite agitation on Monday demanding revision of the stipends in tune with the times.

As part of the protest, students staged sit-in demonstration in front of the JNIMS Ladies' Hostel, on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, JNIMS Students' Association (JSA) president Laishram Lenin reasoned that the strike was called in response to the stipend structure, which has remained unchanged since it was fixed in 2015 .

Despite repeated representations submitted to the authorities over the past few years, no action has been taken, he rued.

"With no positive response forthcoming, we were compelled to resort to an indefinite strike," Lenin stated, urging the government to intervene and act promptly.

He cautioned that the agitation, supported by MBBS and BDS interns, could affect both the academic atmosphere and hospital services.

While the students are not in favour of such agitation, they were left with no option but to safeguard the rights of interns and students, the president maintained.

The strike will continue until their demands are met, he declared.

Lenin further pointed out that JNIMS interns currently receive a stipend of Rs 15,120, compared to Rs 37,000 in Assam and Rs 28,000 in West Bengal.
