National workshop on "Medicinal Plant Research" kicks off at IBSD Imphal

The BRIC-Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (BRIC-LBSD) officially inaugurated a five-day National Workshop today at its campus in Takyelpat, Imphal.
The workshop, titled "Analytical Chromatography Techniques for Quality & Efficacy Assessment of Medicinal Plant Resources (IBSD-SAPB)", is designed to advance research capabilities in the North Eastern Region.
Supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the workshop has drawn 50 research scholars and young scientists from prestigious institutions, including IIT Guwahati, Dibrugarh University, and CSIR-NEIST.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Nanaocha Sharma, Director (Additional Charge) of BRIC-IBSD, emphasized the institute's commitment to the sustainable use of bioresources through biotechnological interventions.
Dr Sharma noted that the workshop serves as a vital platform for experts in ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology and natural product research.
The opening session featured insights from several distinguished BRIC-IBSD scientists, including Dr Sudripta Das, Dr Bisheswafi T, and Dr Lokesh Deb, among others.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from W Mohendro Singh, Senior Administrative Officer.
The technical session began with a lecture by Dr Pardeep K Bhardwaj on the challenges of harnessing bioresources in North East India.
Dr Sayeed Ahmed from Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, discussed the applications of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) in validating traditional medicinal formulations.
Abhijit Khale of Anchrom Enterprises, Mumbai led a hands-on demonstration covering sample preparation and chromatographic separation.
The workshop is scheduled to run through May 22 .
