Imphal, November 17 2024:
Protests erupted at Jantar Mantar in the national capital on Sunday as members of the Meitei community voiced their anger over the recent deaths of six hostages, including children, in Jiribam.
The demonstration, jointly organised by the Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) Women's Wing, Manipur Students' Association Delhi (MSAD), Delhi Association of Manipur Muslim Students (DAMMS), and Ningols United Progressive Initiative (NUPI), drew over 500 participants.
Protesters, holding placards, staged a sit-in marked by chants and slogans directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The demonstrators criticised the central and state governments for failing to curb the ongoing violence and address the crisis in the region.
The discovery of the victims' bodies in the Barak River has amplified public outrage and escalated tensions.
A large group of protestors attempted to march to the residence of Union home minister Amit Shah, demanding urgent action.
Delhi police detained approximately 100 protesters, and whisked them away to Kapashera police station but released later in the day.
