Speaker fears virus surge during poll activities

Imphal, September 15 2021: Expressing concern that holding the forthcoming state assembly election on a festival-like scale may give a big blow to the efforts being made to prevent onset of third wave of Covid-19 pandemic, Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly and Singjamei MLA Yumnam Khemchand has called for exercising extreme caution during campaigning for the 2022 election to minimise the impact of the pandemic.

Attending the formal closing function of Community Covid Care Centre for Singjamei AC set up at Manipur College since May 5, on Wednesday; Khemchand said that the state needs to make all out preparations to fight the third wave of Covid-19.Holding the election like a festival will hit hard the state in case the third wave of the pandemic sets in, as such, those who are actively involved in the election need to exercise caution and extreme care, he said.

Khemchand also thanked the volunteers, doctors and nurses for their contribution in running the Covid Care Centre of the AC.

He also thanked Covid-19 Helpline Centre, Singjamei for its efforts in checking Covid cases in the second wave since Yaoshang festival, which helped in minimising its impact in the constituency.

Though the Centre did not take financial assistance from the government for maintenance and operation, health directorate contributed to a great extent and as a result, there was no casualty in the Centre, he said.

Doctors, nurses and volunteers of the Covid Care Centre were honoured by presenting stoles.

Dr Shanta, urologist at Raj Medicity also presented financial incentives to the nurses for their contribution in the Centre, which had housed a total of 1042 Covid patients since the beginning of the pandemic.
