Imphal, August 13 2024:
Dr Pheiroijam Herojit has made history by becoming the first Manipuri to receive a patent in the field of dentistry for his ground-breaking invention.
His invention, which relates to direct measurement of root canal length during root canal treatment (RCT), offers a significant advancement in dental procedures, addressing key challenges faced by dentists worldwide.
Accurate measurement of root canal length is a critical factor in the success of RCT.
Currently, there are two primary methods used: radiographic and apex locator.
However, the radiographic method poses health risks due to radiation exposure, while the apex locator has an accuracy rate below 80 per cent and is contraindicated for patients with pacemakers.
Dr Herojit's innovative solution involves the use of a special biocompatible dye coated on root canal materials, which changes colour based on pH levels.
This new approach not only increases the accuracy of root canal length measurement but also enhances the overall safety and effectiveness of the treatment, reducing the chances of failure.
In recognition of his contribution to the held of dentistry, the Government of India has awarded Dr Herojit a patent for his invention.
Dr Herojit, the eldest son of Ph Sarat Singh and Sobita Devi of Kongpal Kongkham Leikai, Imphal East, is currently serving as the chief dental surgeon with the rank of commandant at the Composite Hospital, CRPF in Guwahati, Assam.
