Poumai Union holds cultural meet to promote unity and preserve heritage

Senapati, February 12 2026: The Poumai Union, Senapati District Headquarters, organised a one-day Cultural Meet under the theme "Together We Live and Grow" at the Sanyi Dahrii Sports Complex, Khabung Karong, with the aim of showcasing talents, celebrating cultural diversity and strengthening community bonds.

The event was graced by J Kumo Sha, MLA, 47-Karong (ST) AC as chief guest; Kh Siile Anthony, Former Director, NEC as the guest of honour; LS Thaisho, Special Class Contractor, as chief host; and Dr Siba Lohrii, Managing Director of Mt Zion Institute as host.

In his keynote address, RV Hriipunii, President of Poumai Union, said the gathering was envisioned to foster unity and connection among Poumai residents in the town area.

He emphasised that the meet aims to strengthen relationships, promote mutual respect and uphold the dignity of the Poumai people.

RB Pani, President of the PNU, lauded the participants for proudly wearing their traditional attires, calling them a beautiful reflection of cultural identity.

He urged the community to pray for a bright and prosperous future.

Guest of honour Siile Anthony reflected on the virtues traditionally associated with the Poutnai - honesty, integrity and adherence to social norms and encouraged the gathering to introspect on the changes seen in modem times.

He urged youth to cultivate a reading habit to become capable and enlightened future leaders, stressing that development comes through education.

Chief guest MLA Kumo Sha urged the people to remember him in their prayers as he strives to serve the constituency with sincerity.

He emphasised the importance of unity and cooperation for the common good.

Chief host LS Thaisho highlighted the need to preserve the origins of the Barak and Iril rivers, both of which spring from Poumai land and sustain the community.

Calling the Poumai an "emerging tribe", he urged everyone to love, uplift and support one another as development projects expand in the region.

Event host, Dr Siba Lohrii appealed to the community to identify collectively as Poumai rather than dividing themselves into Chilivai, Lepaona or Paomata.

He encouraged all to contribute towards building a better Senapati district.

The meet featured vibrant cultural performances from various colonies under the district headquarters, reflecting the richness and diversity of Pournai traditions.
