Emycold tablets worth Rs 30 lakhs seized, destroyed

Imphal, December 09 2011: A team of personnel from Narcotic Cell of Imphal West District Police led by its OC Inspector W Ibocha seized 36,600 strips of the banned Emycold tablets worth around Rs 30 lakhs from the Sub-Post Office located at Porompat at around 2 pm today.

A prescribed drug for treatment of cough, Emycold has components of Pseudiphedrine, Hydrocloride and Bromhexine Hydrocloride, which could be abused as drug.

The drug haul was seized while being smuggled into the state in the form of postal parcel.

Displaying the seizure before mediapersons at the office of Imphal West Narcotic Cell here this evening, OC Ibomcha disclosed that the parcel containing 13 boxes of Emycold tablets and addressed to one Alex L of Porompat Thawanthaba had been send from Raj 1556 Bazar, Delhi-6 .

Following a special tip off on the content of the parcel, a team of personnel from the Narcotic Cell went to the Porompat Sub-Post office at around 10 am today and found out that the parcel was filled with the nabbed Emycold tablets.

Formal seizure of the drug haul, however, was made only after permission of Divisional Director and other officials concerned of Imphal Post Office at around 2 pm today.

The seized Emycold tablets is manufactured by a non-descript pharmaceutical company which goes by the name of Emi Pharmacueticals, Plot no.501, PO Ranilok, West Sikkim.

The import of Emycold has been banned in Manipur on account of its composition, the police officer explained, adding the drug containing Pseudiphedrine and Hydrocloride components may have been smuggled to Myanmar for making No.4 (Heroin powder) and other psychotropic substances.

He pointed out that the printed price of one strip of the said tablets is Rs 36 .

But once it reaches Moreh, the price goes up to Rs 80 per strip.

The estimated cost of the seized drug haul at the International market is estimated to be Rs 30,18,000 .

The seized drug haul would be handed over to SP of Porompat Police station but there has been no arrest in the case so far.
