World Breastfeeding Week launched

The State Level launching of "World Breastfeeding Week 2026" was held on Monday at the State Family Welfare Training Centre, Lamphelpat, organised jointly by the Directorate of Health Services and Child Health Division, National Health Mission, Government of Manipur.
The week is being observed under the theme "Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in Life: strengthen what works" .
Dr N Hemantakumar, Director, Health Services, Manipur, attending as chief guest, said mothers should breastfeed within one hour of birth.
He highlighted that colostrum contains vital nutrients that protect newborns from infections and diseases.
He urged mothers to exclusively breastfeed for six months and continue along with complementary food up to two years or beyond.
Dr Hemantakumar also noted that breastfeeding strengthens bonding and helps protect mothers from breast and ovarian cancer.
Presiding over the function, Dr N Bino, Director, Family Welfare Services, said mother's milk is invaluable and provides essential nutrition and immunity to infants.
Dr Ayam Sylvia, SNO, Child Health Division, State Health Society, NHM, said the week has been observed since 1992.She stressed timely and proper breastfeeding and called for greater awareness through ASHA and Anganwadi workers.
