Panel formed to address flood in valley

Imphal, June 03 2024:
In response to widespread flooding in Imphal valley caused by cyclonic storm "Remal," the state government has constituted an enquiry committee to ascertain the facts and circumstances leading to the flood and to recommend measures to prevent similar calamities in future.
As per an official order issued on Monday by chief secretary Dr Vineet Joshi, the enquiry committee led by the special chief secretary (relief & disaster management), includes senior officials such as the PWD chief engineer, water resources chief engineer, MAHUD director, DCs of Imphal East & Imphal West districts, LDA project director, and environment & climate change director as members.
The relief & disaster management director will serve as the member secretary.
The committee's mandate includes analysing and identifying the possible causes of breaches in embankments, clogged drains, encroachments on drains and embankments, and the washing away of roads across the state.
The committee will also recommend measures to prevent and manage similar natural disasters in the future.
Additionally, it will address any other related issues, deemed necessary.
The relief & disaster management department will provide secretarial assistance to the committee, which is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the state government by June 13 .
