Imphal, June 27 2026:
The Manipur State Council, Communist Party of India (CPI), has strongly condemned the sudden postponement of the Panchayat election, calling it "unlawful and an attack on democracy".
In a press release, the CPI said the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Y Khemchand on June 26 decided to defer the polls earlier scheduled for October 1, citing the need to complete delimitation of Panchayat areas.
The party noted that the Panchayat bodies' term ended in 2022 and elections have been delayed for nearly four years, depriving people of their democratic rights.
"Denying the public their right to elect local representatives for four years is unacceptable", the CPI stated.
Demanding that the election be held without further delay, the CPI said the Government must respect democratic norms and the rights of the people in Panchayat areas.
