COAS discusses security situation with CM

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi arrived here on a two-day state visit on Friday morning and held discussion with chief minister N Biren Singh on prevailing security and current situation in the state.
General Upendra Dwivedi was accompanied by Lt Gen RC Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Command, Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding 3 Corps, and Major Gen Ravroop Singh, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) during the meeting with CM Biren at the latter's office in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, chief minister N Biren appreciated visit of COAS to the state and claimed having productive meeting with the Indian Army chief.
In a social media post, CM Biren said he had productive meeting with COAS and deliberated on critical issues concerning the current situation of the state and later reaffirmed the cooperation between state government and the security forces in effectively responding to the challenges faced, and maintain peace and harmony in the state.
On the other hand, state government has announced COAS General Upendra Dwivedi as 'state guest' and he will be staying in the state till Saturday and review security situation with senior army officials and meet ground commanders.
Meanwhile, PRO IG-AR-South informed that COAS Gen Upendra Dwivedi was briefed on operational preparedness by commanders on ground immediately after his arrival in the state and also held discussion with heads of various security agencies in the state wherein he expressed his appreciation for the insights shared by them.
In a significant meeting with CM N Biren Singh, the COAS discussed the internal security situation and role of Indian Army and Assam Rifles in ensuring early return of peace and stability in Manipur.
The COAS reaffirmed Indian Army's commitment to ensuring a secure environment for the people of Manipur, maintained the PRO in a statement.
During his visit, General Upendra Dwivedi also interacted with troops and complimented the soldiers for their professionalism, operational readiness, and dedication to duty.
In addition, the COAS also met with veterans and praised their selfless service and their invaluable contribution towards nation building.
The general officer is also scheduled to visit Churachandpur district on Saturday to review the situation there.
General Dwivedi's visit marks his first trip to the state since he assumed the role of COAS on June 30, 2024 .
Upon arriving at Imphal Airport on Friday, he was warmly welcomed by Major General Ravroop Singh before heading to the IGAR (South) office in Matripukhri, about 8 km from Imphal.
The general's visit comes in the wake of ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, which began on May 3, 2023 .
The conflict, which originated in Churachandpur district following a protest march, has resulted in over 226 deaths and displacement of 60,000 individuals.
