Imphal, August 21 2024:
Expressing serious concern over the recent error in the NEC Draft Vision Document 2047 where 'Chin State of Manipur' was mentioned.
Coordinating Committee of Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has demanded the government authority to form a committee to conduct enquiry to find out the people involved and take up appropriate legal actions against them.
COCOMI also warned of launching intense forms of public movement if the government fails to take up the initiative within five days.
Addressing a press conference at its office premises here on Wednesday, COCOMI coordinator Somorendro Thokchom said that the term 'Chin state of Manipur' could be a deliberate act by some individuals.
There is no place with the name 'Chin' in India and there is no reason for making such entry in the official document.
Terming it as an act of provoking the indigenous people of Manipur, he demanded the government to form a committee, find out the people responsible through an enquiry and take up appropriate actions against them.
COCOMI will also submit a memorandum to NEC in this regard soon, he added.
He recalled past instances of adding Lamka to the address of Imphal Airport, and replacing Thangjing with Thangting, to which the government did not take up any action.
There were also instances of renaming several villages in Moreh areas of Tengnoupal district but nobody has been penalised for such acts, he said.
COCOMI also highlighted issues concerning the residents of Ichum Kom village near Leimaram, who are forced to adopt the surname 'Haokip' in their official documents, without which they are denied PDS items and other benefits.
UNC initiated a meeting with the residents over the issue and asked them to remove Haokip from their names.
However, the residents told UNC that the local MLA (Kuki) would deny them scheme benefits if they remove 'Haokip' from their names, he said and criticised the government for ignoring the matter.
