Awareness programme on "Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking" conducted

Imphal, June 20 2024:
Narcotics Control Bureau, Zonal Unit Imphal, under the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs, conducted an awareness programme on "Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking" at the Multipurpose Hall of UNACCO School Meitram today.
The event was graced by S Shurendro Sharma, PRO, and K Herojit Singh, IO, from the Narcotics Control Bureau, Zonal Unit Imphal, said a release issued by UNACCO School.
About 420 students from classes VIII, IX, X and XII participated in the programme.
The event commenced with the felicitation of dignitaries followed by a welcome & keynote address delivered by Apurva Sundar Das, Principal, UNACCO School Meitram.
Speaking on the occasion, Debadatta Keisham, AGM, UNACCO School, informed the students about the importance of organising such programmes at the school.
S Shurendro Sharma highlighted that Manipur is among the States in India most affected by drugs.
He elaborated on how Manipur's environment fosters drug abuse and illegal trafficking, provided statistics on drug usage in the State, and discussed the adverse effects of drugs on youth.
He emphasized that drug use hampers both national growth and the personal development of young people, and underscored the significance of awareness programmes in creating a healthy & peaceful society.
He also educated the students on self-protection against drug addiction, dealing with addicts, implementing various life skills.
The session included a pledge with the students to remain drug-free and contribute to a drug-free society.
K Herojit Singh spoke about strategies to reduce drug abuse, focusing on both demand and supply reduction.
He gave detailed explanations of different types of drugs and noted that India serves as a transit point for drug trafficking from neighbouring countries.
He also highlighted the root causes of drug use among Indian youths and informed the students about the NDPS Act, penalties for abusers under this legislation and exploitation of minors in drug trafficking.
The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session followed by a vote of thanks proposed by K Sunder Singh, Head Master, UNACCO School Meitram.
