Organic farming gets boost as experts advocate climate-resilient agriculture

Imphal, April 13 2026: An International Conference on "Harnessing the Potential of Organic and Natural Fanning for Sustainable Agriculture" successfully concluded yesterday at the College of Horticulture, Bermiok, under Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal.

The two-day event, held on April 11 & 12, 2026, featured a Farmers' Fair and Exhibition, farmer-scientist interactions, and technical sessions to promote resilient agricultural practices amid climate challenges.

Presided over by CAU Chancellor Dr Pradeep Kumar Joshi, the inaugural session drew eminent dignitaries, including Padma Shri awardee Dr Eklabya Sharma, Strategic Advisor at Ashoka Trust for Research on Ecology and Environment; Dr NC Gautam, former Vice Chancellor of MGCGV, Sama, Madhya Pradesh; Dr Santanu Kumar Swain, Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University; Dr Hardeo Singh Yadav, Vice Chancellor of Sikkim Professional University; Dr AK Pandey, Dean, College of Horticulture, Bermiok; and Dr Anupam Mishra, Vice Chancellor of CAU Imphal.

In his address, Dr Pradeep Kumar praised Sikkim's organic farming model, urging its replication nationwide.

Keynote speaker Dr Eklabya Sharma stressed the Himalayan ecosystem's vulnerability, declaring, "Diversification and organic approaches are key to sustaining mountain agriculture in the face of climate change".

Dr Anupam Mishra advocated self-reliance, stating, "We must reduce dependence on external inputs and start managing our natural resources from our own surroundings" .

The conference concluded with the distribution of agricultural inputs to 100 progressive farmers, fostering hands-on adoption of sustainable techniques.
