Thoubal, February 12 2026: A memorial lecture reflecting on the life, leadership and enduring legacy of former Manipur Chief Minister Mohammed Alimuddin was held today at Lilong Haoreibi Turel Ahanbi.

The programme, organised by the Mohammed Alimuddin Memorial Foundation, took place at the late leaders' residence and brought together prominent figures from various fields.

The event was attended by former Minister Okram Joy; chief advisor of the Mohammed Alimuddin Memorial Foundation, Abul Hashim; former rebel leader RK Meghen; retired IAS, RK Nimai, among others who graced the occasion as presidium members.

Dr Syed Ahmed, Associate Professor at DM University; and Naorem Sanatomba, Assistant Professor in the Manipuri Department, Manipur University, served as resource persons of the programme.

Speaking at the memorial, O Joy highlighted the immense contributions of Mohammed Alimuddin during his brief tenure as Chief Minister.

He stated that Alimuddin's courage, integrity and decisive leadership played a crucial role in steering Manipur onto a path of development.

Joy lamented the contrast between the political ethics of Alimuddin's era and the present-day political climate, stating that contemporary politics often prioritises personal and familial gains over principles and rule of law.

He recalled that Alimuddin upheld strict integrity, mentioning that even his own son had to stand in queue to meet him, underscoring the discipline and fairness he upheld -traits that today's politics, he said sorely lacks.

Joy added that Manipur, in its current troubled state, needs a leader of Alimuddin's stature.

In his address, RK Meghen recounted the establishment of the Pan Manipur Yout League in 1968 and its initiation of Patriots' Day observance from 1969.He recalled a significant moment when Mohammed Alimuddin, attending the event as chief guest, displayed genuine love and sincerity for Manipur - an image he said remains vivid in his memory.

Meghen noted that it was on that day that Patriots' Day was declared a State holiday by Alimuddin, marking a historic step in honouring Manipur's heroes.

He stated that the former Chief Minister's contributions to the State were well known and did not need elaboration, emphasising that the Meitei Pangal community has always played a crucial role in the State's welfare.

Amid the present critical situation in Manipur, Meghen stressed the need for leaders like Mohammed Alimuddin and former Naga leader Yangmaso Shaiza -individuals who placed the welfare of the state above personal or community interests, and who possessed the courage and honesty to make sacrifices for Manipur.
