AITUC, Manipur Loumi Lup join Nationwide protest at Irawat Bhavan

Imphal, August 10 2026: Joining the nationwide protest called by central trade unions and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) against the Union Government's labour, agricultural and privatization policies, the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur and Manipur Loumi Lup staged a protest meeting in Imphal on Monday.

A public meeting was held at Irawat Bhavan, Rupmahal Tank, with representatives of various central trade unions and farmers' organisations.

After the meeting, the protesters attempted to take out a rally but were stopped by police and security forces deployed at the Irawat Bhavan gate.

There was a brief scuffle, but the rally was not allowed to proceed.

The protesters raised demands including restore peace and normalcy in Manipur, update NRC in Manipur, establish Highway Protection Force, repeal the four Labour Codes, provide minimum wages to all workers, implement Minimum Support Price (MSP) and enhance minimum wages for scheme workers.

Speaking on the sidelines, AITUC Manipur general secretary Laishram Sotinkumar said the protest was decided at the joint convention of workers and farmers held on July 29 at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi.

He said the day was observed coinciding with the Quit India Movement of 1942 to launch a united struggle against what he termed as anti-people and pro-corporate policies.

Sotinkumar alleged that farmers are facing distress due to low prices for their produce and rising costs, and that the four Labour Codes would affect workers' rights, including extension of working hours to 12 hours, engagement of women in night shifts and coal mines, and issues related to wages and job security.
