Waree Leeba Guu Okram Baruni passes away

Imphal, August 09 2026:
Renowned exponent of Manipuri Waree Leeba, a traditional narrative art form of Manipur, Okram Baruni Singh, popularly known as Pukhao Baruni, passed away at his residence at Khewa Phuiju-Pukhao in Imphal East on August 3 .
He was 94.He had contributed immensely to the promotion and preservation of Manipuri Waree Leeba art.
In recognition of his service, he was honoured with various titles and awards by different organisations.
The Manipur State Kala Akademi conferred the State Akademi Award on him in 2007.Condoling his demise, the Repertory of Waree Leeba, Manipur, Head Office, Khurai Chaithabi Leirak, said that as an executive committee member, he had dedicated himself to the Repertory till his last breath.
A condolence meeting was held at its head office presided over by its president Khomdram Surendra Singh.
The gathering observed a two-minute silence and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
The Repertory stated that his demise is an irreparable loss to the field of Manipuri Waree Leeba art.
