In a moving ceremony steeped in pride and reverence, Assam Rifles paid homage to Rifleman/GD Champeshwar Mahakhud, who made the ultimate sacrifice during a high-risk counter-insurgency operation on September 7, 2018 in the remote Sajik Tampak region near the IndoMyanmar border.
According to a release issued by the IGAR (South), the tribute was held at the very site of his martyrdom and witnessed the presence of officials and troops of Assam Rifles.
The event commenced with a Guard of Honour and wreath laying at the memorial, followed by a two-minute silence observed in solemn remembrance of the fallen soldier's courage and commitment.
On the day of the operation, intelligence inputs indicated that heavily armed insurgents were planning to infiltrate the hinterland through the general area of Dipilun, close to Border Pillar 52 .
In response, 29 Assam Rifles swiftly launched a special patrol and ambush operation in the vicinity.
Rifleman Champeshwar Mahakhud was deployed as part of the stop party tasked with intercepting hostile movement.
When a large column of insurgents confronted the patrol, he stood firm and engaged the enemy with exceptional bravery.
Despite sustaining critical injuries in the firefight, he continued to hold his position until he succumbed to his wounds, exemplifying the highest traditions of selfless service.
The ceremony served as a powerful reminder to all ranks of the enduring legacy left behind by Rifleman Mahakhud - a legacy defined by valor, loyalty, and unwavering dedication to the nation.
His sacrifice continues to inspire generations of soldiers to uphold the ethos of Assam Rifles, the "Sentinels of the North East" .
