Celebrated singer, artist, lyricist, and educationist Phurailatpam Iboyaima Sharma passed away at his Keishamthong Irom Pukhri Mapal residence on Friday at the age of 81.Born in 1943, Sharma's contributions to the cultural and educational landscape of Manipur were immense and widely recognised.
He served as the president of Apunba Manipur Matam Eshei Kanlup (AMMIK) and was honoured with several prestigious awards throughout his career including Life Time Achievement Award by AMMIK in 2013, Sangeet Bhushan (Matam Eshei) by Manipur Sahitya Parishad in 2011, Lifetime Achievement (Chahisigi Seisakpa 2020) by Sheirengbasingee Apunba Lup (SHAL) Manipur, and The Thokchom Sanajaobi Memorial Award 2022 for Lifetime Achievement in Matam Eshei by The Cultural Forum, Manipur.
Moreover, he worked as professor of English at GP Women College.
Prior to that he was the head of Economics Department at Oriental College, Takyel.
Sharma also wrote novels and contributed several articles in different journals.
In a release, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal deeply condoled the demise of art ist Phurailatpam Iboyaima Sharma and convened a condolence meeting at the Parishad auditorium, where a two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the departed soul and shared the pain and grief of the bereaved family.
It also prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
Meanwhile, Apunba Manipur Matam Ishei Kanglup (AMMIK) also deeply condoled the untimely demise of its former president and Singer Phurailatpam Iboyaima Sharma.
While recalling his contributions to Manipur Matam Ishei, AMMIK, in a release, informed that a two-minute silence was observed and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
