Imphal, August 30 2024:
Chief minister N Biren defended the Central government's role in managing the ongoing conflict in the state, emphasising that the central leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah, has been deeply committed to restoring peace and stability in Manipur.
He also highlighted extensive efforts made by the Centre, including deploying resources and engaging in continuous dialogue, to address the violence and foster reconciliation between the communities.
According to him, the Central government's involvement has been crucial in steering the state towards the path of recovery and unity.
In an exclusive interview with Aaj Tak, Biren opened up about the current crisis in the state, the efforts towards restoration of normalcy, and the role of the Central government in the ongoing peace process.
In general, it is becoming normal now, Biren stated, acknowledging that certain areas remain tense, with individuals from Imphal finding it difficult to travel or work in some parts of the state, particularly in conflict prone areas.
Addressing these concerns, Biren stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving the underlying issues that have fuelled the conflicts.
He highlighted the situation in Jiribam, where the government engaged in discussions with local leaders and facilitated dialogues between different communities.
"After that, there is complete peace in Jiribam.
Both the communities have decided that whatever you want to settle politically, do it, talk, but we will live in peace," Biren remarked.
The CM also addressed concerns about the involvement of Central government in Manipur's affairs.
While some critics have suggested that excessive Central intervention has exacerbated the situation, Biren defended the Central leaderships for their commitment to the state.
"Manipur is loved so much by its Central leaders, especially the Prime Minister and Amit Shah," Biren noted.
He highlighted the symbolic gestures made by the Central government, such as renaming a site in Andaman in honour of Manipur's historical contributions and the extended stay of MoS home Nityanand Rai in the state.
He argued that these actions reflect the government's genuine concern for Manipur, while dismissing suggestions that the Prime Minister's absence from the state was a sign of indifference.
When asked about his interactions with the Kuki community during the height of the clashes in May 2023, Biren affirmed his commitment to representing all communities in Manipur.
"I am the CM of all communities of Manipur.
1 am not from Meetei's house, I am not from Kuki, I am not from Naga, I am from everyone," he contended, reiterating his impartiality and dedication to unity.
Biren acknowledged the difficulties' of maintaining communication with various communities amidst the violence, but he emphasised his efforts to engage with different groups and facilitate dialogue.
"We met our brothers and talked and also did telephonic conversations," he said.
As the state continues to grapple with the current Unrest, the CM remains optimistic about the state's future.
He reiterated his belief in dialogue as the primary means of resolving conflicts and called for continued efforts to heal the deep-rooted divisions within society.
"Dialogue is the only way," Biren concluded, expressing hope that through ongoing communication and cooperation, Manipur can achieve lasting peace and unity.
