Imphal, May 26 2024:
Meetei/Meitei Tribe Union (MMTU) has announced launch of 'Eigi Yumpham, Eigi Hak' campaign, aimed at highlighting and addressing challenges faced by the valley people, particularly those settling in the foothills without land titles, from June 1 .
In a statement, MMTU Youth Wing convener Haobijam Surjit Singh informed that the twomonth campaign will cover the five valley districts by a 10-mem-ber committee comprising male and female representatives.
MMTU said the campaign envisions aiding the Meetei families without land records and titles possess their rightful documents.
During the campaign, the Committee members will meet elected representatives and submit representations to them, key officials of the Revenue and Settlement Department and also submit pertinent documents to the SDC, SDO and DC.
The release also highlighted that due to the absence of land titles, people are unable to avail benefits of various government schemes such as housing loans and others.
Meetei students without land titles face difficulties during admission and job application processes, as the latest land title payment receipts are required at the time of form submission.
Such a situation reduces indigenous Meetei similar to outsiders/refugees in their own land, a problem aggravated by improper implementation of the MLR&LR Act 1960 .
Additionally, the Revenue and Settlement Department's top officials prioritised personal gains, leading to land title allotments influenced by elected representatives who interfere in the process, it claimed.
MMTU also urged officials involved in land title allotments to refrain from bribery and corruption, considering that Meeteis without land titles cannot afford such payments.
It also called on the state government to issue land titles to those without one, regardless of their ability to pay premiums.
Additionally, the government should take action against department officials involved in corrupt practices during land title allotments.
The release also appealed to the public, Meira Paibis, and elected representatives to support the campaign, and urged SDC, SDO and DC concerned to cooperate in the campaign.
