Imphal, May 25 2026:
The Thadou Students' Association (TSA) on Monday said proper identification and protection of the Thadou community is vital amid continuing ethnic tensions in Manipur.
In a press release, TSA noted that Manipur has long been a "mosaic of diverse ethnic communities" and that the Constitution's 1956 Scheduled Tribes list for Manipur clearly records Thadou as a distinct tribal community.
The association said the situation has gradually improved following the August 6, 2025 understanding between Thadou Inpi Manipur and Meitei civil society groups COCOMI, AMUCO, FOCS, and AT in Imphal.
It paid tribute to "Manipur Peace Martyr" Nehkam Thadou, who died in Assam in 2025, and to three Thadou Church leaders killed jn a targeted gun ambush in Manipur on May 13, 2026 .
According to TSA, Imphal is becoming safer for Thadous for transit, medical care, education, employment, and habitation.
However, it advised Thadou individuals and families who do not identify as "Kuki" and have no link with Kuki ideology to stay in regular contact with the TSA Helpline (7005443525) while travelling to or residing in Imphal and valley areas, citing the risk of escalation.
TSA reiterated the Thadou community's distinct historical, cultural, and social identity and appealed for peace, mutual respect, and communal harmony.
