Governor discusses Loktak conservation with LDA chief

Loktak Development Authority (LDA) chairman Moirangthem Asnikumar met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday and discus sed ongoing initiatives aimed at preserving Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands.
During the meeting, Asnikumar outlined the ecological, cultural, and economic importance of Loktak Lake, emphasising its role in maintaining biodiversity and supporting the livelihoods of local communities.
He provided an update on the conservation efforts being implemented to restore the lake's ecological balance and protect its catchment areas, flora, and fauna.
Highlighting the challenges facing Loktak Lake, Asnikumar revealed that seven of the 36 streams feeding into the lake have dried up, while the remaining streams are severely polluted.
He underscored the urgent need to restore these streams to their original state to ensure the lake's survival.
He also shared updates on the state government's initiative to rejuvenate the Nambul River, including the treatment of its water before it flows into the lake.
The LDA chairman informed the Governor that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been submitted to the Centre for the rejuvenation of Nambol and Moirang river systems.
He also raised concerns over the pollution in the Waishel Maril and Merakhong Maril streams, which flow into the lake, and emphasised their cleaning and restoration as Vital for conserving Loktak Lake and mitigating floods.
Asnikumar stressed the importance of community participation in achieving the ecological restoration of the lake and emphasised for active involvement from local residents to ensure the long-term sustainability of the conservation efforts.
Expressing concern over the impact of the Loktak Hydro Project on the lake and its wetlands, the Governor reaffirmed his commitment to preserving this natural treasure and emphasised the need to preserve Loktak Lake and its wetlands for future generations, recognising their invaluable contribution to the state's ecological and cultural heritage.
Bhalla commended the efforts of the Loktak Development Authority in safeguarding the lake and urged Asnikumar and his team to continue their dedicated work.
