Kamjong farmers educated on sustainable farming

Imphal, April 19 2025:
A day-long consultative meet on "Village level geo-economic development through sustainable farming" with farming community was held at the community hall, Shingkap village, Kamjong district on April 16 .
A release issued by Tribal Resource Development Centre (TRDC) informed that the interactive session was organised jointly by the centre in collaboration with Development for Rural People (DRP) .
The deliberation among the farmers with experts and resource person witnessed a huge turnout of cultivators, where they discussed at length the method of cultivating organic and cash crops.
The hilly region of Manipur is very fertile and rich in land resources.

Addressing keynote address, entrepreneur and promoter of rural organic farm-ing Yaruingam Ningshen emphasised on the selective cultivation of crops driven by high demand to generate cash income to the farmers.
Cultivation of cash crops on large scale is the need of the hour as it would eventually generate much income to the farming community.
The American Cancer Society discovered the ill-effects of food crops grown on the soil which was contaminated by excessive use of chemical and pesticides.
The detrimental impact of consuming foods grown on the land contaminated by fertilisers, pesticides and others chemical are children born with physical deformities.
He also drew a line between organic and non-or-ganic farming and its impact on the human health and to the soil and warned the participants of the grave dangers of using chemicals, pesticides like Roundup (Glyphosate) and other fertilisers to the farmers.
Noted dietician and nutritionist Dr Changmei Shadang highlighted the extreme importance of maintaining balanced diet by taking organic food avoiding red meat, processed food/products and fast food from our daily menu.
Too much intake of red meats has a long term adverse effects on our health.
The benefits of taking green tea is of utmost importance to us as we are fond of consuming large quantities of meat in our daily diet.
The regular intake of herbal tea will negate and undo the ill-effects of consuming meat on regular basis, the dietician explained.
Ningreingam Kashung, an agronomist who is well-versed in rural economy motivated the delegates to adopt intensive farming as the land is very rich so that a thriving market is created attracting the companies to come and buy agricultural products directly from the farmers.
An apiculturist Athui Panmei, who has undergone vast training on bee keeping spoke about the prospect and potentialities of this farming as it would generate perennial source of income to the bee keepers.
The program concluded with a benediction pronounced by the village chief Solomon Awungshi, followed by seeds distribution of high yielding varieties (Moringa seeds and Roselle seeds) to the farmers.
