Imphal, August 18 2026:
The Salaai Kanba Lup (SKL) has extended full support to the ongoing general strike demanding implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, calling it the "permanent solution" to the State's ongoing crisis.
In a statement, the SKL said NRC is essential to detect illegal immigrants and to protect the identity, demography and security of Manipur's indigenous communities.
It added that the unrest in the State since May 3, 2023 is largely linked to illegal immigration, and without NRC such issues will continue to recur.
The organisation clarified that for Manipur, NRC is not a political issue but a matter of safeguarding the land, unity and future of its people.
"If we cannot identify our own citizens, we cannot live in peace and security", it said.
It urged the Government to conduct NRC in Manipur based on 1951 as the base year, and to complete it before the next census.
The group also appealed to all MLAs, as true representatives of the people, to raise the demand strongly.
Stating that NRC is about verifying genuine citizens and protecting the rights of every Indian, the body said a clear NRC list is crucial for national security, welfare and future planning.
Without it, the State will remain vulnerable to unrest.
The organisation further announced support to the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) which is demanding that NRC be updated in Manipur before undertaking the census.
It said all units of Salaai Kanba Lup across Manipur will support the campaign and participate in future movements demanding NRC .
