RIMS microbiology building, Maldi-TOF Biotyper inaugurated

The newly constructed building and Maldi-TOF Biotyper (Bruker Bio innovation) of the Microbiology Department of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal have been inaugurated on Thursday with director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma as chief guest, Department of Microbiology head Dr Khuraijam Ranjana Devi as president and dean (Academics) Prof Brogen Singh Akoijam and medical superintendent Prof N Sanjib Singh as guests of honour.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof G Sunil informed that the New Microbiology building has been constructed as advised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for students of post graduates, MBBS, PhD, MLT and other courses.
The new building has separate laboratories for bacteriology, virology, fungus, etc., with Biosafety level-II laboratory.
It can accommodate a space for national programme like HIV, Hepatitis and others programmes, elaborated the director.
He also described the new building as a significant feat for the medical institute as there is not such spacious and separate building for microbiology department in the whole North East region.
It is also one of the most dedicated centres for microbiology.
In future, Biosafety level -III laboratory will set up to carry out specific highest level project, maintained Prof Sunil, who also informed that MALDI-TOF MS is a smart and reliable technique that has been implemented in clinical microbiology laboratories to replace or complement conventional phenotypic identification of bacteria and fungi.
MALDI-TOF/ MS allows us to reduce the turn-around times by an average of 1.45 days in comparison with the traditional phenotypic methods used for microbial identification, he conveyed.
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by deputy director (Admin) RK Mecolt Singh, CAO/FA Sairem Sarat Singh, principals of RIMS Dental College and College of Nursing, HODs, nursing officials, faculty members, students and staff of RIMS.
