Imphal, June 17 2024:
Kuki Women Union, Jiribam & Tamenglong (KWUIT) has endorsed the indefinite blockade along the National Highway-37 called by Kuki-Zo Village Volunteers (KZVV), Vangailhang & Tuilangko.
While claiming that the Kuki-Zo people of Jiribam and surrounding areas had persistently advocated peace since the ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 last year, the union alleged members of a Meetei organisation of burning down five houses in Raniveng (under Jiribam district) and three in Phaitol village (in Tamenglong) in addition to prohibiting Kuki-Zo people from using NH-37 .
Further stating that members of a Meetei group had on February 21 abducted six Kaimai villagers who were on their way to Silchar, but compelled to release them due to intervention of the police, the statement said in-spite of such hostile attitude and conduct, the Union strived to resolve outstanding issues to avoid untoward incident.
However, KWUIT condemned blockade of essential supplies to Kuki-Zo people by Jiribam-based Meetei organisations, declared its endorsement of the KZVV decision to impose counter blockade while declaring that the government shall be held responsible for any consequences arising out of non-compliance with the counter blockade.
