22nd Students' Martyrdom Day observed in Jiribam

Jiribam, August 16 2026:
The Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Jiribam District Committee, observed the 22nd Students' Martyrdom Day at the auditorium of RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya on Sunday, commemorating the sacrifice of student activist Pebam Chitaranjan.
Pebam Chitaranjan had set himself on fire on August 15, 2004, in protest against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) .
Students, youths, representatives of civil society organisations and locality leaders attended the observance and paid floral tributes to the portrait of Chitaranjan.
A two-minute silence was also observed in remembrance of his sacrifice.
Speakers recalled Chitaranjan's protest against AFSPA and highlighted the significance of his sacrifice, urging the younger generation to remember his stand and contribution to the movement against the Act.
The programme was attended by former Jiribam Adhyaksha Kh Janaki Devi, All Jiribam United Club Association vice-president Mutum Shyamkumar, Jiribam Higher Secondary School in-charge Principal Kh Indikumar Singh, AMAWOVA president Th Priyadhasani and MSF Jiribam District Committee president Th Samananda Singh, who constituted the presidium.
