'Thangmeiband Meepham' resolves to uphold traditional customs, curb lavish practices

Imphal, February 16 2026: A public gathering titled "Thangmeiband Meepham" was held today at Apunba Leikai Community Hall, Thangmeiband Khomdram Selungba Leikai, to discuss the practices and customs involved in pertinent ceremonial rituals from one's birth till death (rites of passage).

The meeting was organised by the Enat Yokhatpa Luptin (EYOL) in collaboration with KAMPAL, KHLWDO and THUYC.

The participants unanimously adopted a series of strict resolutions aimed at preserving indigenous Meitei culture and banning non-traditional practices in the region.

The meeting resolved to curb lavish wedding practices, banning cake-cutting, gift exchanges, and ribbon-cutting at wedding halls.

Excessive spending on attire, jewelry, and photography/videography was also clamped down on.

Photographers and videographers are now required to wear traditional pheijom and pungyat.

Additionally, sound amplifiers, bombs, and postwedding trips are off the cards.

Participants also pledged to enforce EYOL's August 10, 2024, conference resolutions and support its cultural regeneration movement.
