Imphal, May 15 2024:
Seventy students from government schools, including top two students from each of the 16 districts, who scored over 70 percent marks in the 2023 High School Leaving Certificate Examination (HSLCE) and Higher Secondary Examination (HSE), were honoured with incentive awards.
The awards were presented during a ceremony organised by Department of Education (S) at the SCERT multipurpose hall in Lamphelpat, here, on Wednesday.
The top two students of each district were presented Rs 50,000 and 25,000 respectively through the direct benefit transfer (DBT) along with certificate.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, education (S) commissioner H Gyan Prakash informed that the state government has been providing cash incentive to meritorious students of government schools since 2018 with number of students enlisted for the rewards increasing steadily each year.
He also said that 70 students were considered eligible for the incentive award in 2023, a testament of the students' dedication and support of their teachers and parents.
While students from government schools excelled in the Class XII Arts and Commerce streams, it is regrettable that none could make it to the top positions in Science stream, the commissioner expressed.
Gyan Prakash also assured government efforts to expand remedial courses and address any shortcomings in government schools on a broader scale.
Delivering the presidential speech, education (S) director L Nandakumar said that students who excelled in the Class X examination and received incentives should not get complacent but strive for success in the Class XII examination, crucial for attaining their desired goals.
He further said that in 2018 when the government launched the incentive awards, a total of 37 students were eligible while the number reached 63 students in 2022 and further to 70 in 2023 underscoring that the government policy is bearing fruit.
From amongst the 70 students who received the incentive awards for the 2023 session, 30 are from the hills and 40 from the plains.
Notably, 40 of these students are from schools covered by the School Phagathansi Mission spearheaded by the chief minister, Nandakumar said.
The function was also attended by education (S/Valley) additional director Bisheshwar Khumukcham and education (S/Hills) additional director Dangmei Manglem as guests of honour.
