RIMS hosts awareness programme on 'Rare Diseases'

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, through its Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases (CoERD), today organised a Hybrid Awareness Programme on "Rare Diseases inManipur" under theNational Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021.The event was held at Sushruta Hall in collaboration with the State Health Society, National Health Mission (NHM), Manipur.
Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, inaugurated the programme in the presence of Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital, and Dr N Shugeta Devi, State Nodal Officer for Rare Diseases, NHM, Government of Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Sunil Kumar stressed that early diagnosis, coordinated multidisciplinary care, and increased awareness among healthcare professionals are crucial for improving outcomes for patients with rare diseases.
He reaffirmed RIMS' commitment to strengthening specialised healthcare services under NPRD, 2021.Prof Ch Shyamsunder, Nodal Officer, Rare Diseases Committee, CoERD, RIMS, presented an overview of NPRD, 2021, outlining its objectives, support mechanisms, and the role of Centres of Excellence.
Technical sessions covered Antenatal Screening, Newborn Screening, and indicators for suspecting rare diseases, followed by an interactive Q&A .
A meeting of State Nodal Officers for Rare Diseases under NHM Manipur was also held to discuss strengthening collaboration and services in the state.
Faculty members, doctors, healthcare professionals and NHM officials attended both physically and virtually.
