Leishemba Sanajaoba, Manipur's lone Rajya Sabha MP and titular King of the State, has called for the preservation and protection ofthe historic Vishnu Temple, located in Bishnupur district, about 27 Km from Imphal city.
In an address at the Rajya Sabha today during Zero Hour, Leishemba Sanajaoba said that the Vishnu Temple in Bishnupur, is one of Manipur's oldest known-brick Temples, built during the reign of King Kiyamba (1467-1508 AD), showcasing unique Meitei-Burmese-Bengali architectural fusion, and serves as a significant cultural symbol.
"The temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, was built by King Kiyamba after receiving a Vishnu emblem as a gift from a Shan King (Upper Burma)", he added.
He also informed that the Vishnu Temple is a protected historical monument, managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, GOI.
"The Vishnu Temple is a crucial cultural and religious site, representing Manipur's early Hindu history and its deep cultural ties with neighbouring region", said the MP while appealing to the Central Government and ASI to make dedicated effort to conserve, promote, and develop the historic Vishnu Temple.
Leishemba Sanajaoba also urged the Centre to appoint a permanent caretaker, a chowkidar, and a gardener, to ensure proper maintenance, continuous visibility for visitors, and to promote the site as a heritage tourism destination.
