Four die, five hurt in Ukhrul road mishap

At least four people died and five others were injured in a road accident that occurred between Poi village and Awangkasom village under Chingai subdivision in northern Ukhrul on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as Martha Alungnao, Yareichon NS, Peace-nao Raising, and Mazanthei Maluk, all from Poi village, while the injured include Shangreihao A Shatsang, Chonreishon M Shimray, Ngachonwon RK, Kashangmi Shimrah, and Chihanngam Bukli, all of whom are also from Poi village.
According to sources, they were travelling in a Bolero Camper from Poi village towards Nungbi village when the vehicle developed a sudden mechanical failure and veered off the road at a spot near the Laichakka stream at around 12:30 pm.
Meanwhile, the Raphei Katamnao Long (RKL), the apex students' union of the northern region, has urged the relevant authorities to improve the poor conditions of the inter-village road.
In a communication with the media, RKL president Paomi Khaveishang stated that the tragic accident occurred due to gross negligence and the failure of the authorities concerned to ensure safe roadways for the public, adding that the risks posed by improper road conditions are unacceptable.
"We call upon the relevant departments to take immediate and decisive action to address these pressing issues.
Delays or inaction will no longer be tolerated, as the lives of our people cannot be jeopardised," he said, demanding an urgent assessment and repair of road infrastructure to meet safety standards.
