Many mourn demise of Thoidingjam Tombi

Imphal, September 05 2026: Writers' Forum, Imphal has deeply condoled the demise of renowned painter, writer and former Principal of Imphal College Thoidingjam Tombi Singh.

Tombi, 89, passed away this morning after a brief illness.

A condolence meeting was held at the Forum's office at Nagamapal Lamabam Leikai under the chairmanship of its president Irungbam Basanta.

Members observed two minutes of silence praying for the departed soul to rest in heavenly abode and shared the grief of the bereaved family.

Born in 1936 at Khagempalli Panthak, Imphal, Tombi studied Fine Arts at Imphal Art College and at MS University, Baroda under Hanjabam Shyamo Sharma and KG Subramanyan.

His works depicted Manipuri rural life, politics and culture with compassion in a modernist style.

He served as president of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad (2015-18) and chairman of Manipur Art Society (2011-13) and was honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Awards (1974, 1976) and Chitrakala Ratna 2026 .

Meanwhile, The Cultural Forum, Manipur has also expressed profound sorrow over the demise of Thoidingjam Tombi and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
