Imphal, July 02 2026:
The Manipur Semgat Sagatpa Lup (MASSAL) Students' Wing has expressed serious concern after finding Nongpok Heirok Primary School under Lamlai AC locked during an inspection visit due to continued absence of teaching staff.
The school's SMC convenor confirmed the closure stemmed from teacher absenteeism.
Enrollment has fallen from over 70 students in 2025 to 29 now.
In a release, MASSAL alleged that Head Master In-Charge Salimuddin Chouduri, along with Primary Teachers Birembor and Irlauddin, have been absent for years.
Mayanglambam Rosinkumar, transferred to the school on June 29, 2026, has also not reported for duty, it added.
Locals revealed that in 2025, with no teachers present, the community ran the school by collecting admission and monthly tuition fees from parents to ensure classes continued.
Noting the school is just 25 km from Imphal, MASSAL condemned the negligence and urged the Government and Education Department to take strict disciplinary action, remove the absent teachers, and appoint dedicated staff.
It demanded urgent intervention to revive the school and safeguard students' right to education.
