National seminar on teaching, learning and evaluation held

Imphal, December 29 2018: Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar has conveyed that students often face a time in their life during which they find themself driven away from the academic path on their journey from school to college.

He said that an appropriate communication, methodology should be adopted to address such occurrence.

The Deputy Chief Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the National Seminar on "Reforming teaching - learning and evaluation in collegiate education", organised by Federation of Government College Teachers' Associations (FEGOCTA) in collaboration with YK College Wangjing, Lilong Haoreibi College, DM College of Arts and DM College of Science Imphal at Sangai Continental Hall, Imphal Hotel today.

Addressing the gathering, Joykumar underlined the importance of nurturing human resource, which is a primary resource, for bringing development in the State and the country.

Stating that students, while attending College for the first time, often develop a careless and independent attitude which lands them in trouble or make them take wrong decisions in their later life, he went on to say that teachers should be caring and vigilant enough of these changing attitudes /mentality and adopt an appropriate communication methodology to guide the students towards the right path.

Joykumar noted that adopting a strong and healthy communication between teachers and students, apart from interactive teaching, will arouse the interest of the students so that they engage in the teaching-learning process enthusiastically.

Making the students understand what they are being taught and developing the capability to apply the knowledge throughout their life, is of utmost importance in education, Joykumar added.

He urged the teachers' fraternity to infuse the notion to keep learning at different stages of one's life to the students.

Observing that the students following the present system of education system need, a breathing/cooling space, he said that the popular trend of mandatory tuitions giVes heavy pressure to the students while preparing them for the cut-throat competitions arid examinations, apart from ruining the real value of education.

He said that teachers should think beyond evaluating the performance of a student merely on marks/grades and consider the assets of a students by evaluating the overall performance.

The Deputy Chief Minister expressed hope that the deliberation and knowledge sharing among the teachers' fraternity during this seminar will go a long way in improving the education system in Manipur and the country as well.

Meanwhile, FEGOCTA president Dr A Pishak informed that FEGOCTA, which is the apex body of Government College teachers in Manipur, aims to look after the problems, plights of college teachers and to fortify the education system in the State by conducting seminars, workshops and other programmes from time to time.

Pishak said that the syllabus of the higher education in the North East region must be able to cater the requirements of students for competing in both the National and International levels.

YK College Wangjing Principal Dr S Giri, Lilong Haoreibi College Principal Dr A Surenjit, DM College of Arts Principal Dr A Sheelaramani and DM College of Science Principal Dr E Jadu also attended the function as guests of honour.

Later in the afternoon session, many professors, lecturers including Dr Kalpana Bhakuni of Kamala Nehru College, Delhi University and Professor RK Narendra of Department of Biostatistics, RIMS Imphal presented papers on various topics.
