Imphal, April 27 2026:
As part of the Government of India's National HPV Vaccination Campaign, the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Programme was officially launched at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal today.
The launch event was led by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, at the Paediatric Immunization OPD.
He was joined by Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital, along with various department heads and faculty.
As per a release issued by RIMS, the campaign specifically targets girls aged 14 years.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Sunil Kumar emphasized that HPV vaccination is a vital intervention against cervical cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women.
In a commitment to preventive healthcare, the vaccine is being provided free of charge at RIMS, he added.
The local launch follows the nationwide rollout initiated by the Government of India in February 2026, which aims to cover approximately 1.15 crore girls annually.
The RIMS authorities have urged parents and guardians to bring eligible beneficiaries to the Paediatric Immunization OPD at RIMS Hospital during regular OPD hours.
They stressed that early vaccination is critical for building long-term immunity and protecting children against HPV-related diseases.
