AR foils cross-border smuggling of areca nuts

Assam Rifles foiled a smuggling attempt near Petrol Pump, Moreh in Tengnoupal district and seized Burmese areca nuts worth over Rs 17 lakh yesterday.
During a routine mobile vehicle check, the Assam Rifles troops spotted two vehicles approaching from Moreh side, said a press note issued by IGAR (S).
As the Assam Rifles troops advanced, they noted suspicious behaviour from the drivers who abandoned the vehicles and fled into the dense jungle.
Upon searching the vehicles, the Assam Rifles troops uncovered a hidden stash of 40 sacks of Burmese areca nuts concealed beneath 34 bags of shoes and four bags of slippers.
The areca nuts were valued at approximately Rs 17.28 lakh in the international market.
The seized items and vehicle were subsequently handed over to the Customs Preventive Force in Moreh
for further investigation.
