Imphal, June 26 2024:
Moirangthem Tomtomsana Nongsaba, who contested the recent Lok Sabha elections, managed to escape from the clutches of police on Wednesday.
Police had been unable to arrest Tomtomsana (56) s/o (L) Tombiyaima of Heirok Part-II Pujari Chuthek, since April this year.
However, on Wednesday, Tomtomsana along with young son and daughter were travelling in a Bolero when the vehicle was intercepted in front of the Imphal Airport along Tiddim Road by police and briefly detained him.
As the police vehicle reached Keishampat Thiyam Leikai and got stuck in the traffic jam, Tomtomsana jumped out of the vehicle, thus, resulting in a scuffle with the police.
As the police attempted to arrest him again, a group of people encircled the police team paving the way for Tomtomsana to flee from the area.
Meanwhile, his daughter, who is studying in Class IV and his three-year old son sought refuge at Keishampat Thiyam Leikai.
A team of District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) arrived at the location and met with the kids.
After contacting other family members of Tomtomsana, denizens of Keishampat Thiyam Leikai handed over the kids to them in front of the DCPU team.
According to reports, Tomtomsana was travelling along with his kids and his nephew, Moirangthem Rajesh and a driver in a white colour Bolero (MN06LB 7199) when police tried to round him up.
Narrating the ordeal, Rajesh said that all five of them were on their way to meet an acquaintance, who had just landed at Imphal Airport, after attending an event at Heirangoithong earlier in the day.
After meeting the acquaintance, they came out of the airport and were met by a police Gypsy vehicle waiting at the gate.
He further recounted that some police personnel alighted from the Gypsy and halted their vehicle.
Two personnel boarded the Bolero on the back seat while another officer took the wheel and made the driver to ride the Gypsy.
Tomtomsana and his kids were seated in the middle seat while he (Rajesh) was in the front passenger seat.
As the two vehicles reached Kwakeithel., another Gypsy joined blocking Tomtomsana's Bolero both at the front and back, before heading towards Keishampat.
Upon reaching Keishampat traffic point, Tomtomsana opened the door of the Bolero and jumped out, followed by the police trying to herd in Tomtomsana back to the vehicle, resulting in a brief scuffle, including exchange of few punches.
Seeing the commotion, people present nearby rushed towards them, allowing Tomtomsana to escape and forcing the police to leave the area as well, he recounted.
