Kids in distress urged to avail benefits of 'Project Assist'

Imphal East deputy commissioner (DC) Kh Diana has called upon all concerned to avail financial assistance being provided under the Project Assist Scheme meant for taking care of the educational expenses of children orphaned or have lost one of their parents in the ethnic conflict or other forms of violence.
Addressing the media at the conference hall of Imphal East DC on Friday, Diana informed that "Project Assist' is a financial assistance scheme launched under the National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH) of Ministry of Home Affairs.
The scheme is meant for providing financial assistance for education of children in distress.
She further informed that under the scheme, eligible children will be provided monthly stipend of Rs 1250 till Class XII; Rs 1500 till graduation and Rs 1750, if any professional course is pursued thereafter.
The assistance will be provided to the children until they attain the age of 25 years and cover all children who meet the criteria.
Diana continued that in Imphal East district, there are only 15 beneficiaries.
As such, children who were orphaned by the on-going conflict which broke out on May 3 last year can avail the financial assistance.
She also urged all concerned to avail the benefits, while adding that many beneficiaries of the scheme have become extraordinary individuals.
Informing that the beneficiary list is updated every year, she assured that the district administration will help the beneficiaries in accessing/possessing relevant documents.
The DC also informed that recently, around 40 cases were registered for award of ex-gratia under the Central Scheme for Assistance to Civilian Victims, of which around 23 people have been given the benefit.
Process is underway to enrol children of these people under the Project Assist, she conveyed, while adding that other children left orphaned or have lost one of their parents in communal conflict and societal violence may avail the benefits of the scheme.
